A
New Beginning, a New Approach
With leading
chemist Dr Shoaa Abdul Rahman at the helm of this ambitious company,
which operates in cooperation with Lund University and Cairo University,
the progress can already be seen. While only in their second year
of business, 10 patents have been filed, with four of these patents
out-licensed to major pharmaceutical companies.
Novel
pharmaceutical molecules
The Gateway to Drug Discovery logo describes what Newpharmaresearch
Sweden is achieving. The area of expertise is the discovery, development
and commercialisation of novel pharmaceutical molecules. Newpharmare-search
has designed and synthesized novel pharmaceutical compounds, discovered
new uses for and enhanced the activity of existing compounds.
To prove their capabilities to the world, a disease
was identified and solutions were sought to control the disease. Coccidiosis
is the single most important disease in the global poultry market,
a market worth an estimated $4.1 billion in the year 2000 (Vivash-Jones
Consultants Ltd). Additionally, Coccidiosis is shown to have multiple
resistance, so new products will be required each year.
Key
solutions
The Newpharmaresearch team has come up with key solutions to Coccidiosis,
using their three different approaches:
- Organic Synthesis, which resulted in a new Antibiotic Quinolone
(Patent No: WO 01/36408 A1) and Novel Urea Compounds (Patent No: WO
01/30749) both, successfully proven to be active against Coccidiosis.
- The second approach is Potentiation, which resulted in a Potentiated
Clopidol (Patent No: EPA 0102175-7) this solution has reduced the
dosage of the anti-coccidial Clopidol, from 125 grams per tonne to
30 grams per tonnes. The new Potentiated Clopidol has the added advantage
of anti-fungal properties in animal feeds.
Which leads us to New Uses: In a world first, anti-ulcer
treatments have been discovered to also work against Coccidiosis.
Resulting in Novel Composition (Patent No: EPA 00850205.6).
Newpharmaresearch has proven they can reach their
targets in a time efficient and cost effective way. In this manner,
todays projects are being carried out on, Helicobacter pylori,
which is responsible for stomach ulcers and stomach cancer. The Newpharmaresearch
team is approaching this insidious bacteria, using the same core competencies,
they used against Coccidiosis- Organic Synthesis, Potentiation and
discovering New Uses for drugs and/or chemicals.
