The advancement of the biotechnology industry depends largely on the equipment it has at its disposal. This presents unparalleled opportunities for companies such as Boule Diagnostics International AB in Sweden who specialise in the development, production and international marketing of world-class medical tools.

Boule Diagnostics Intl.
ready to capitalise

The company’s two main product ranges are instruments for haematology blood analysis (Medonic and Swelab cell counters) and reagents for infectious disease diagnostics (Phadebact® and Phadirect®), 95% of which are sold outside of Sweden.
“Our technologies are based on decades of careful improvement and optimisation of both instruments, reagent development and manufacturing,” says Boule’s Ernst Westman.
“We focus on providing high-quality, cost-effective instrument systems and reagents for intermediate size hospitals. Our instruments offer the accuracy of big-lab equipment but with low maintenance costs.”

A more industrial enterprise

Established in 1992, the company has gradually moved away from research to become a more industrial enterprise focused around life-science. The company’s biggest efforts so far have been in haematology - the screening of blood for diseases.
“The haematology market was estimated at USD 1.3 billion in 1998 with an annual growth rate forecast at two percent to 2003. However, the point-of-care market is estimated to have even more dramatic growth. One of the prioritised screening parameters requested in the point-of-care market is haematology and with our current patent and product platform for the sim-plification of test procedures in this area, we have an excellent opportunity to capitalise on this,” says Westman.

Our unique Micro Pipette Adapter
The company has a number of unique strengths that Westman is confident will propel Boule into what is a very competitive market.
“Firstly, we have our unique Micro Pipette Adapter (MPA) technology which introduced the first capillary samples into accurate haematology analysis. Secondly, we also have a point-of-care system for haematology already under development.”
The company has also just completed a successful round of financing which will enable it to concentrate efforts in new system development and also to expand marketing efforts in the USA.
Westman concludes: “Ultimately, we would like to develop our research to the point-of-care for patients therefore fulfilling the demand for products that allow relatively unskilled persons to carry out advanced testing.”
