Biotech valley
The core of both commercial and research activities related to Swedish bio-technology can be found in the greater Stockholm area.

Five major universities, university colleges and several smaller research and education facilities are located here and also all major research funding organisations. This area is often described as the Biotech Valley of Sweden.

Strängnäs
Strängnäs is a small town west of Stockholm, easily reached in 45 minutes with the high speed train. This town has been associated with biotechnology and production of phar-maceutical substances for more than 50 years.

Today, the leading biotech company is Phar-macia corporation. The Strängnäs plant is a core facility for biotech production for the company. The annual market value of the pharma-ceutical products marketed here is close to 1 billion U$.

In addition to Pharmacia, both DSM Anti-Infectives and AstraZeneca have production facilities in Strängnäs. These companies are supported by a number of smaller service companies. A new trend is - that new and growing biotech companies have located activities related to production in Strängnäs. These companies benefit from using the BCS laboratory, a combined teaching and project / research laboratory set up jointly by the local industry, Malardalen University in Eskilstuna and local secondary educators. A new initiative focused on the manufacturing of biotechnology based products is now also being launched.
